Trailer

Just to clarify: I know Starlight Glimmer and Trixie appear in one shot of the trailer, but they look like brief cameos. They don't seem to be the main characters, which is something I really appreciate. They already have the show.

COMMISSION/REQUEST LIST!
I HAVE A PATREON!

At first I wanted to make a drawing of grown-up Apple Bloom dressed as Wonder Woman, but the pony movie trailer unexpectedly came out and it seems to be a chance to talk a little bit of it and also to make a comic about it.

Before I start, let's remind that the job of a trailer is to show stuff and to determine whether you are or are not going to see a film. From that perspective, I think this is a good trailer. Unexpectedly good I must say. :D (Big Grin)

I’m kinda surprised because I expected something awful, like Pinkie Pie being obnoxious as she is in the later seasons from the show. Or, at the very least, that was what my fear expected (like Fear from Inside out, who is constantly on the lookout for potential disasters). But the movie looks good. The art design, the colours, the characters, the fact that the movie will be an adventure with the six main characters, the color composition... Some people might be bothered by some 3D effects. I admit that they don't look polished (in fact, is looks like a joke when you realise that the movie took so long to be made), but overall it looks ok, specially with some beautiful shots of Equestria. I really like the special effects and it seems to be a pretty funny movie. The part where Spike turns into a Flounder-ish fish. That was the best part for me. If they can make a hilarious instant like that, I think the movie will be very funny. Naturally funny I must add.

There are minor details that I don't like. For example, when I first saw the promo of King Storm, I thought he would be a great menacing villain, the first great villain of Friendship is Magic since Chrysalis from A Canterlot Wedding. But here he seems to be the... funny character I guess. It was a bit underwhelming. Someone told me he's like that because of the prequel comic, and, even though I haven't read it, I can understand the reasons. I think the main villain will be Tempest Shadow, so I hope he or she will be the dangerous villain.

Another details I didn’t like were those comedic pauses. This is something it gets old pretty quickly. Even the show has moments like that. I think it’s the main purpose like the laugh track: "This is where you laugh" instead of laughing at something naturally funny... like the fishy Spike. And I didn't like the song at the end of the trailer. It's pretty generic. I hope they can make a wonderful soundtrack, not only for songs, but also for instrumental. Imagine something like the music of Beauty and the Beast (the 1991 film). That would be amazing. And some quotes sound kinda off, like "let's write whatever we want but quick".

However, I can accept all of this for one beautiful reason: In April I've made a wish list of what I wanted from this film (you can see it here).

-The Mane 6 are the main focus: Check
-Magic used as a storytelling element to advance the story: Well, the seaponies scene would count, so... Check
-Standalone movie: Check
-New villain: At the moment he or she looks nice, so let's hope his/her motivations are strong.
-The main characters not dived into full parody mode: At the moment every character is nice.
-Focus on the story: Let's wait until the movie is out.
-New and wonderful art design: Check
-Amazing shots of Equestria thankd to the animation: Check
-Orchestral music: Welp, I have hope.

In other words, most of my wishes are coming true. This seems to be the My Little Pony adventure I've been asking for since the ending of season 3 (that was four years ago). This is the kind of stuff I've been asking for in the seasons 4, 5 and 6 (the Mane 6 on a huge adventure) and, unfortunately, I had to wait for a very long long time. That doesn't mean they are not bad seasons. I love some of its episodes (heck, Crusaders of the Lost Mark is one of the 5 best episodes in the entire show), but they are very minor compared to the typical stuff. Now, it's time to be really positive. I won't expect it to be a masterpiece of cinema or anything like that. The only thing I'll ask for after these wishes coming true is a good and solid story. The story is the reason why I loved the TV show.

Some people ask why I don't like Starlight Glimmer even though I tried to explain it. To put it simple:
-Somehow she's more powerful than an alicorn like Twilight. In fact, she looks like one of these main characters from fanfictions made by teenagers.
-Her backstory wasn't enough to have an emotional connection with her in season 5. It's not even that dramatic or shocking.
-After two rushed episodes, she's the seventh main character.
-After Every little thing she does, she has no redeeming value anymore.

I understand most fans have many and different reasons to love her (she constantly receives well done fanarts made by passionate artists). That's completely understandable. There's no black and white. But this kind of inconsistent stuff is not for me. Fortunately this doesn't affect me anymore, probably because I don't care what's going to happen with the show. But I'm getting off track here.

Overall, the trailer looks ok (even generic), but the stuff I really love is the stuff I've been asking for the show for years. So I'm happy. The movie is definitely in good hands.

And who knows? Maybe the movie will be more than good. Life is full or surprises. The Wonder Woman film was the first good DC film in many years (unless you count the two Lego films). Maybe there's some hope.

Except for Ridley Scott. He's been making uninspiring films for the last 17 years.
